Why Does It Feel Like So Many Young Adults Suffer From Depression?

Monday, February 1st, 2010

It just seems like a lot of young adults suffer from one form of anxiety, depression, or eating disorder or something. Any reason why?

  1. [...] Why Does It Feel Like So Many Young Adults Suffer From Depression … [...]

  2. This is a question I can actually relate to.
Nowadays you see a lot of families breaking up, family members and friends dying, and family members and friends going off to war. This contributes greatly to how unstable our minds can become.
There is also possibly television and movies, as crazy as it sounds. This is one of the biggest influences in society, and that’s a no-brainer. I bet it’s very very difficult to find someone young who has not watched television or a movie.
Also people who tend to suffer from this keep it to themselves, which results in much worse.
I apologize for not giving any internet sources, but hopefully being a former patient in a mental institute for severe depression and attempted suicide might help out.

  3. Is it just young adults…? I don’t know, maybe it’s a period in life when you’re still trying to figure out what you want. Also, it seems to be a time when you feel like if you don’t start at a young age, you may adversely affect your future, and so many people get overwhelmed and may think that they are not getting as far ahead or doing as much as they should be doing (me included). I’m 21 and I feel like I should have done a lot more by my age and I haven’t. This is a constant stress for me mainly out of fear I guess.

  4. The excuses about “today’s lifestyle” is silly. It’s easier to live today than it ever was. Cell phones and skinny people in mags don’t cause depression. It used to be that you had to worry about getting eaten by bears. That causes depression. Getting plague causes depression.
I think it’s natural selection in part. It used to be that depressed people had no means of survival. If you were depressed you got killed off by something, but now a days, more depressed people mope around because there’s nothing directly deadly about depression unless it leads to suicide. This is why suicide is up, and crazy illnesses down.
Specifically, young people are depressed because of raging hormonal changes and intensity in mood. You find that young people are the predominant group for crime, rape, depression, anything that involves wild untamed emotions. They get very high euphorias and very low depressions. As you age your mind often stabilizes more, and hormones reduce. That and the brain cells die off and you actually lose some of the excessive brain activity that spurs depression, even though you have more wisdom – the wisdom helps too.

  5. I’m no psychiatrist, but i believe the reason is because they aren’t sure of who/what they want to be, who they are, and what they want to do. It can also be because of the hormone levels rushing through. Also the pressures of life, peer pressure, family pressure, eventually it all takes a toll on a person.
and it usually happens in the teenage years because that is when they are the most insecure.

  6. Okay i suffer from anxiety and i think that well…..l for stress we have so much drama in our lifes plus school and relationships that it gets us worried and makes up get nervous and we get anxiety….depression i think is because we think to hard on the world and all of the bad things that are happening and it just makes us feel like there is no control and no happiness so we get deppressed and eating disorders is beacuse of the image we have in this day and age in society we have so many thing taughting us about our body that it makes us feel horable and we try to make them perfect…hope it helps =]]

  7. If they got off their arses and exercised more and ate better food, plus keep away from excessive alcohol and taking drugs, it would’ t happen.
There was an experiment conducted recently on this and most young adults felt more alive and suffered less depression.
Today its gimme gimme gimme. If its not electronic where you sit on your ****, I don’t want to do it.
    ATTITUDE that’s what needs changing.

  8. Societal, Parental, Peer pressure to have the most successful career, perfectely in shape, drive the perfect car, have the best looking gf bf or spouse, live in the biggest house. American culture is one of ultimate competition. Think about it, it starts in the beginning with parents pushing their kids into every sport activity and expecting them to be the best and it just goes on from there. All this pressure will of course scare the heck out of a young adult and put so much stress and cause the issues listed above.

  9. because of all the pressure. to be skinny, pretty, smart, perfect, its not always so easy. being in high school and middle school are different than being in the real world. you only get asked out if you are hot or skinny. even though people say that what stress could they have its not at all like that. we have homework, have to look good, work out, out of school activities, social life and it just all adds up.

  10. look at who they are looking up to! the role models the young adults have have a huge impact on them. look at paris hilton, nicole richi, ashelee simpson. then they pressure from school to be thin as possible, the prettiest! pick up a teen magazine and you will see what they are going though. now days you will even see “sex” advice in them!

  11. I think it’s sometimes because of heredity factors and other times, because today’s lifestyle is so crammed with activities, responsibilities and information, lots of people have a difficult time managing.
It’s not easy to live with tons of stressors, and many of us do.
    take care.

  12. Same reason all these kids are being diagnosed with Autism. Kids are not allowed to be kids anymore. BACK IN THE DAY, when parents were allowed to beat their kids, we didn’t have these kinds of problems. And most of us turned out ok. The rest live their days out in prison.

  14. ? Mrs. D? says:

because their parents don’t know how to deal with kids any more and are so restricted on what is acceptable when disciplining them. kids are simply lost and it’s easier to diagnose them with a disease and medicate them then to give them the love they need.

Could it be it is something in our food/water that all of us do not absorb anymore?
Do we find several children are not creative at younger ages?
Depression is getting more prompt with everyone. Good question, with no good answer.

  16. because young adults are still developing the way they feel about things in life and many times as we are still developing that means our hormones are still developing too, which can make one pretty confused and upset for not a whole lot of reason.
