Was There Any Good Reason To Commit Suicide During The Great Depression?

I have an essay to write about if sometimes it was better to die (by getting someone to kill you or by committing suicide) than to live during the great depression, and I have to find reasons why. Any ideas?

The stock market had collapsed during the Great Depression. All the businesses were affected. Suddenly people found themselves in deep debt. They lost sight of all hope. Suicides were common.
I think such a situation that is so full of hopelessness can be a reason to resort to the dreary action called suicide.

This is a tragic and thought-provoking question. I wouldn’t limit it to the great depression. In my mind, there were countless situations (and still are) where suffering seems intolerable. Living in Haiti might be a timely example. But for all the horrible, horrible things people live through (yes, there are still slaves today, many in america and yes, there is still senseless killing around the world), survivers seem to survive. I see stories on TV of people living through HELL ON EARTH, and for SOME reason, they don’t kill themselves. I’m not sure why.
I suppose everything has a threshold of intolerability. Read “The Road”… there is a horrible scene where he has the gun to his sons head with tears in his eyes because if they would be caught, they would be cannibalized. There are some things worse than death.
That said, I’m taking a moment of silence now for all those suffering in the world.

Is there ever a good reason to commit suicide? I don’t think so. then I am a Bible student and I believe that you should watch out how you treat this body that belongs to Him.
If being poor was a good reason to die, sweetie i would have been gone a long time ago, so would ninety percent of the population.
the only time I would even entertain the thought of someone killing themself would be if they had a terrible disease and had pain all the time.

The only good reason to kill yourself would be if you were one of the people in the Twin Towers on 9/11 and you knew you weren’t getting out alive. Killing yourself would not be a bad idea.
