Do You Suffer From Severe Depression And Have Access To Weapons?

Monday, February 8th, 2010

I’m curious how many people out there suffer from depression to the point where they often feel suicidal, and also have access to weapons (in particular firearms).
For these people, they obviously have a relatively straightforward method available to commit suicide, yet they continue to live on. I’m curious, for these people, how do those with access to weapons avoid the temptation of suicide when it is so readily accessible to them?

Although now I am not suicidal and suffered from severe depression around 5 years ago I did and still have access to firearms. The below incident stopped my suicidal thoughts.
My husband is a hunter, and also has hand guns in a gun safe. I know where the key is and have at one point opened it, and held one in my hand. Pretty brave for one that hates guns because of my ex.
I walked around with the gun in my hand and saw my children’s shoes and clothes in the laundry room (where the safe was). I started thinking of my two children, husband, family and friends who cared for me. As much as I wanted to, I kept thinking of my kids growing up with out their mother and the emotional damage I would do to those around me.
Just because I suffer from mental disorders and I would not wish it upon no-one and I would have caused so much more pain to them.

  3. Suicidal tendencies and suicidal symptoms are two very different things. Depression is a disease which most of us know who have had it and/or live with it.. We look (even when depressed) for ways to treat the depression, not end it permanently. I’ve always had weapons in the home and never once did I ever think to use one, always went for a knife instead. Really there are many weapons of death in ones home other than guns, like knives, glass, water, poisons etc. you get my drift, and for many having a gun in the home is like having any other piece of furniture or utensil or cleaning supplies. Picking up the phone & asking for help takes far more less energy than planning to shoot oneself, and most people do just that…… I am wondering how many people think in these terms that have other diseases/illnesses. Maybe they also do, periodically. A diabetic wouldn’t think to kill themselves anymore than we should.

Depression, in today’s world, is in each persons life.
I too have had it but time is a great healer. I take it as a karma balance and wait patiently.
I indulge in music, the best anti-depression medicine.

My ex-boyfriend committed suicide this past December using the shotgun he used to go duck hunting with a couple months before. You’re correct, it is a real risk.
